My grandfather used to tell me of his experiences on the Pacific War. In those days,
he took part in the Philippines campaign in 1945 — one of the heaviest battles that
were fought on this War.
Of these stories, the most interesting one was that the feces of Japanese soldiers
were much fouler than ours. The smell, he recollected, was so strong that he could
perceive the vile odour even from a scout plane flying over the Japanese camp.
He concluded that this was because Japanese people had much longer bowels than
Americans though their average height was one foot shorter than ours.
Since he was a man of talent to make his humourous fake stories plausible, I didn't believe
this story — until I came to Japan and entred into a public convenience in Shinjuku station.
